O projekcie

  • Tworzenia spójnej metodyki ochrony motyli Apollo w bioregionie kontynentalnym
  • Poprawę jakości siedlisk gatunków, takich jak ochrona siedlisk lęgowych i żerowisk
  • Tworzenie korytarzy ekologicznych
  • Podnoszenie świadomości w zakresie ochrony i utrzymania siedlisk i gatunków
  • Wzmacnianie zaangażowania społecznego w ochronę gatunków

Gardens for Apollo: Butterflies, Caterpillars, and People!

One of the core activities of the Apollo 2020 project, focused on the conservation of Parnassius apollo in Poland, Czechia, and Austria, is creating habitats for these beautiful butterflies. We’re excited to introduce "Gardens for Apollo" – special places where nectar-rich plants bloom and caterpillar host plants grow. Each garden is built with the help of local communities, guided by our team of experts.
Education Meets Conservation!

The journey begins with fun educational talks and workshops for both children and adults. Some of these gardens, especially the smaller ones, are more about teaching. School gardens show how even a little change can make a big impact! By attracting pollinators, we`re not only making the area more vibrant but also supporting the Apollo butterfly’s habitat.

Spreading Wings in Apollo`s Land

Some gardens are set in larger areas, where we plan to reintroduce the Parnassius apollo. These gardens are more than just beautiful spots – they help establish Apollo-friendly habitats. This year alone, we created FOUR Gardens for Apollo and revisited one from 2023.

Creating Gardens with Passion!

At Jelenia Góra’s Arts and Crafts School, despite late sowing, we saw a budding meadow – a hopeful sight! In May, we also planted two new Gardens near Uniemyśl, where we worked with campers, locals, and schoolchildren to create butterfly havens full of Sedum. It was amazing to see everyone’s enthusiasm!

A Blooming Community!

At Primary School No. 1 in Kamienna Góra, energetic students helped us create a Sedum “roundabout,” transforming the school lawn into a future wildflower meadow. And in Niedamirów, we worked with the Karkonosze National Park to plant 10 acres of butterfly-friendly space – a true family event filled with lectures, workshops, and, of course, gardening!

𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗹𝘆 🦋

🍂 Autumn is the perfect time to prepare new habitats for the Apollo butterfly. Recently, our team members from Karczma sądowa: Sudecka Stacja Terenowa Klubu Przyrodników, together with staff from the Nadleśnictwo Kamienna Góra, cleared shrubs from a rocky outcrop in Okrzeszyn to plant 𝘚𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮, also known as large stonecrop. This hardy plant serves as a vital host for Apollo caterpillars.

🌿 If the stonecrop takes root, the habitat will naturally evolve, making the exposed slope an inviting environment for Apollo butterflies to thrive. Our hope is that one day, Apollo himself will grace this new habitat with his presence!

Conservation in Action: Meet Our Naturschutzhunde Team!

In our mission to protect the endangered Apollo butterfly, we’ve enlisted the help of some incredible four-legged partners—Naturschutzhunde! These specially trained dogs help us locate Apollo butterfly larvae in remote, hard-to-reach areas. Their amazing sense of smell allows us to monitor butterfly populations with precision, even in the most challenging terrains.

With 5 certified Naturschutzhunde, we’ve been able to gather essential data across 15 regions in Austria, guiding our efforts to protect and restore Apollo butterfly habitats. Thanks to their work, we’re getting closer to safeguarding this beautiful species for future generations.

Follow us to learn more about how conservation dogs are helping preserve Europe’s biodiversity!
