ORGANISATION

The European Wilderness Society is an Austria-based conservation organization dedicated to preserving Europe’s last remaining wilderness areas and promoting sustainable coexistence between humans and nature. As a key partner in the LIFE Apollo2020 project, the society leverages its extensive expertise in habitat restoration, biodiversity conservation, and stakeholder engagement to support the recovery of the endangered Apollo butterfly (Parnassius apollo). With a focus on innovative solutions and community collaboration, the European Wilderness Society ensures the project’s success in restoring vital habitats and fostering long-term ecological resilience.

ABOUT

Max A.E. Rossberg, Chairman of the European Wilderness Society, serves as Project Manager for the LIFE Apollo2020initiative in Austria. Co-financed by the EU, the project focuses on the conservation and restoration of habitats for the endangered Apollo butterfly (Parnassius apollo), ensuring its long-term survival.

Under Rossberg’s guidance, the project integrates traditional land management practices with innovative strategies, including the use of pollinator corridors, habitat connectivity, and butterfly breeding programs. Key activities include:

  • Core Habitat Restoration: Actions such as debushing, tree coppicing, and planting host plants (Sedum album) to support the Apollo butterfly’s lifecycle.
  • Breeding and Releases: Coordinating breeding programs that have produced thousands of eggs, caterpillars, and adult butterflies for reintroduction.
  • Monitoring and Research: Ensuring adaptive management through continuous population and habitat monitoring.

Rossberg fosters collaboration with local stakeholders, ensuring the sustainability of restored habitats. His leadership makes LIFE Apollo2020 a model for biodiversity conservation in Austria and Europe.

#followapollo and the efforts of our team! Combined skills in breeding, conservation of habitats, research, environmental education, and project management constitute a great combination for the success of our LIFE project.
