Habitat Observation and Action in Hinterbichl: Expanding the Apollo Corridor Beyond Virgen
As a natural extension of the Virgen valley, Hinterbichl plays a crucial role in the ecological connectivity of Parnassius apollo glocnericus habitats. Located less than 6 km from Virgen, the site offers an ideal opportunity to strengthen the stepping-stone network for this rare alpine subspecies in East Tyrol.
During field visits on 22 June and early July 2025, the Apollo2020 team focused on evaluating habitat conditions and planning concrete restoration measures. Using drone imagery and on-site mapping, several overgrown areas were identified for improvement.
In agreement with the landowner, the team undertook the following actions:
- Sowing approx. 2,300 seeds of native nectar plants, including wild teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) and creeping thistle (Cirsium oleraceum)
- Planting 40 Sedum plants to support the existing caterpillar population already present at the site
Most importantly, a targeted debushing operation is scheduled for summer 2025. This intervention will open up stony, sun-exposed areas to promote the growth of larval host plants and nectar sources, enhancing the site’s long-term suitability for P. apollo glocnericus.
“Hinterbichl and Virgen are less than 6 kilometers apart—making them a perfect ecological pair. Restoring both ensures gene flow and stability across the landscape.”
